Programmable Control for Lumber Drying in Chambers
نویسندگان
چکیده
A programmable control system for the convective drying of lumber in chambers is developed, based on specially designed drying algorithm, which allows computing the set-point values for the temperature and the relative humidity of the heating and drying air as a function of the wood type, wood thickness and the current average value for the wood moisture content and wood temperature. The special three channel measuring instrument ensures reliable and correct on line wood moisture measurement results for the correct set points calculation of the main controller in different working regimes. This individualization of the drying regimes according to the parameters of each consignment of different materials ensures optimization of the quality and minimization of the energy costs of the whole process. Besides, the implementation of the developed control system proves its high reliability. It is not only cheaper but also easier to tune service and apply in small woodworking companies.

One important problem in lumber drying is to maintain the lumber moisture content distribution within certain minimum and maximum values. Over-drying and under-drying are common causes for lower grade recovery and dimensional stability problems. It is known that both over-drying and underdrying can be reduced by sorting green lumber into different moisture content groups and sorting also offers...
متن کاملDrying Energy Efficiency Through Partial Air-Drying: A Case Study
The green lumber products tend towards a state of equilibrium with the surrounding environment. The final target is the equilibrium moisture content (EMC). Whether is natural convection in the lumberyard or forced convection in the kiln drier, the road towards the final EMC consumes time and energy. The air drying operations (natural convection) are not an easy task for the drying management. T...
متن کاملPrinciples and Devices for Controlling the Drying of Lumber
It seems like almost everyone either has a new controller for their lumberdrying operations or is thinking about getting one. In the July 1988 Forest Industries, in "A shoppers' guide to electronic kiln controls," I described some of the benefits likely to accrue to users of these machines. Those benefits include improved grade recovery, greater kiln productivity, better use of limited steam su...

By EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Hardwood lumber drying in the South is subject to hot and humid weather that promotes enzymatic stain in sapwood. Research has long studied the problem and certain remedies have been proposed. Chemical dipping is the most commonly used method of preventing enzymatic stain. However, its application is only topical and does not prevent stain. A private operator, Danny Elder o...

This paper presents an experimental evaluation of the first commercial scale dry-sort-redry (DSRD) strategy for drying of 2x4 Pacific coast hemlock (PCH) lumber. The DSRD strategy is a methodology designed to reduce final moisture content variability in kiln dried lumber by complementing conventional drying with radio frequency vacuum (RFV) drying technology. The strategy’s objective is to avoi...
